FAQs: Rates and Insurance

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions.  If you have other questions, please don’t hesitate to send them to me at DrMarciaJMcKinley@gmail.com.  If enough people ask the same question, it will probably end up on here soon!

Q:     What are your rates?
A:     That depends. As of Jan. 1, 2017, my hourly rate in Herndon, Virginia for coaching, consultative, or advocacy services is $120. Unfortunately, I cannot provide a receipt for you to submit to your insurance company for those services.

At my private practice in Germantown, I am an in-network practitioner with Cigna, Carefirst PPO, and Blue Cross/Blue Shield Federal Employee Plan.  If you have any other type of insurance, I can provide you with a receipt for my services which you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement.

Q:    Can I check with my insurance company to see what they will reimburse for out-of-network providers?

A:    If you would like to see me in Germantown for therapy, I encourage you to do this. Please ask what the company will reimburse you for the following CPT (procedure) codes:
* 90791 (psychiatric evaluation)
* 90832 (16-37 minutes of psychotherapy with the client and/or a family member)
* 90834 (38-52 minutes of psychotherapy with the client and/or a family member)
* 90837 (53+ of psychotherapy with the client and/or a family member)
* 90846 (family psychotherapy, without the client present)
* 90847 (conjoint family psychotherapy, with the client present).

Q:     Will the insurance company ask me any questions about you, as the provider?
A:    They might. If so, please provide them with my Gaithersburg address and the following codes:
* Maryland License #LC5264
* NPI #1336534007
* EIN #81-4806419 (this employer ID number is for Marcia J. McKinley, PhD d/b/a      Advancing Inspired Minds).

Q:   Are there forms that I should complete before our first appointment?
Yes.  Please complete the following forms and bring them with you to your first appointment:  either the AIMAdultPsychosocialHistoryForm or the AIMChildPsychosocialHistoryForm, depending on the client’s age, and the AIMClientContactForm.  In addition, please bring any prior evaluations or reports with you to your first appointment.

Q:   Is insurance reimbursement provided for coaching services?
A: No. Coaching is not covered by insurance so if you choose to see me for coaching in either location, I will not provide you with a bill that has therapeutic codes on it.

Q:   Why might I want coaching versus therapy?
A: Coaching tends to be a more time-limited process in which the focus is on providing concrete solutions to help you better reach your goals. Much of my coaching revolves around academic issues, ADHD, or other executive functioning issues. Given the clients who are drawn to working with me, coaching often has a psychoeducational component, in which I am helping individuals better manage their space or workflow or to help them explore their career options.  Other clients prefer not to have a diagnosis associated with their name; diagnoses are necessary in order to obtain insurance reimbursement.

Q:   I notice that you have training in neurofeedback. Do you provide that service in Gaithersburg?
A: The equipment required to do neurofeedback is very expensive, so while I had wonderful training in neurofeedback, I do not do training myself. In Herndon, I frequently refer clients to BiofeedbackWORKS in Virginia (which is the same suite of offices as mine). I also have referrals for biofeedback and neurofeedback in Montgomery County should you be interested in those services.
